A welcome message from our Interim Priest and Senior Warden

St. Michael’s Calls New Rector

portrait The Rev.4x6

St. Michael’s is excited to welcome our new Rector, Rev. Rick Luoni and his wife, Katrena, to our church family. The Luonis will be coming to us from Summerville, S.C., where Fr. Rick has been the Rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church for the past seven and a half years. Prior to that, Fr. Rick served at Church of the Holy Cross on Sullivan’s Island. Originally from West Virginia, Fr. Rick studied Journalism/Advertising at West Virginia University and received his B.S. in Business Administration, Business Management and Accounting from Concord College. He made his way to California where he worked in the business world before accepting and acting on his call to the ordained ministry. In 2005 he received his MDiv. from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Katrena is a gifted artist and currently works as a Visual Stylist – you’ll have to ask her about that and the kinds of projects she undertakes! Katrena is an active, integral part of St. George’s serving on both the Altar Guild and Flower Guild (which she started) as well as working with Children’s Ministry and using her art and design talents for the benefit of the church. She sang in her church choir for 16 years. Katrena is a warm, friendly and interesting woman. In Fr. Rick, your Search Committee and Vestry found many of the qualities our congregation was seeking as indicated in the Parish Survey. First and foremost you wanted a spiritual leader. Fr. Rick has a deep spiritual foundation and devotional life. He celebrates the Eucharist with joy and reverence and delivers dynamic, relevant, inspiring, fresh sermons. He is genuine, humble, humorous, engaging, intelligent, and warm. He is a Cursillista. He is about Jesus and love! During his time at St. George’s, Fr. Rick led his parish through very difficult times and the church has rebounded with the fruits of growth in every way. Children’s Ministry and Youth Ministry have flourished as well as many outreach ministries and projects. Tapping into the Spiritual gifts of the members has been vital in these successes. Fr. Rick brings a breadth of exposure and experience to us including street and prison ministries. His business and marketing background equip him well to manage the administrative and financial duties of our parish. There is an aura of energy and enthusiasm about him and his vision for what we can do together at St. Michael’s. Near the end of his on-site visit with us Fr. Rick told us that we have all the resources in the world here at St. Michael’s. He said, “Why can’t WE be THE neighborhood church? We can be, and I want to be.” Get ready to roll up your sleeves and jump in as together we determine where God is leading St. Michael’s in this next season.
